Asu Surf Camp offers front-row access to the world-class waves on Asu Island in the Hinako Archipelago off Sumatra. Asu Surf Camp sits right in front of the world class Asu Left, with 11 other top tier waves within striking distance.

Surf & Seasons
The Surf
You can be surfing from a selection of 12 different waves in the area. Primarily Asu, out the front door, but you also have access 11 other waves within striking distance.
Your surf guide will put you on the best spot every morning and afternoon.
Seasons
High Season (March – October)
Long-period southwest swells from the Indian Ocean arrive like clockwork, lighting up Asu Left and the surrounding waves with consistent overhead + waves. This is the time of year to come if you are looking to score overhead to double overhead + waves.
Low Season (Novemver to February)
Often overlooked, the low season is magic in the Hinakos. Still providing fun sized swells but with zero crowds, this is our recommended season for the intermediate crowd. Bawa, Mini Bawa, Tiger Claw, and No Expectations love the light north/west winds this time of year and can often be scored with just the crew staying at Asu Surf Camp.
Waves
- Asu: 200m left hand point break over coral reef. 3 barrel sections, multiple take-off points, fast and barreling or walled and playful, depending on swell. Best at 3’-12’ and holds big waves, double to triple overhead, if you like the juice, you’re gonna love Asu. Works on all tides!
- Bawa: 150m right hand reef break. Deep water wave, over coral reef, but rarely do people hit the reef here. Surging takeoff, this wave jumps out of deep water. Known as the ‘Sunset Beach’ of Indonesia. 2 barrel sections, one on take-off and another on the inside bowl. Works on all tides.
- Mini Bawa: A series of right hand peaky reef waves, even has a short left off of one of the peaks, this wave is very versatile and gets really good with the right size and tide, offering barrels, ripable walls, and super fun sessions when Bawa is a little too much.
- Tigers Claw: This short and sweet left hand point break over coral reef is an unforgettable beauty when it’s on. A 100m ride with a predictable barrel section.
- Knick-Knacks: 100m right hand point break over reef and sand. Super fun wave with 3 takeoff sections with barrels and fun ripable walls.
- Bombie: A sea mount right hand ‘bombie’, this wave is challenging for all levels, with no lineups except a boil just under the takeoff, this wave draws off the sea mount and throws amazing backless barrels with the right conditions.
- Secret Right: This wave is, well, let’s just say, sssshhhhhh… Too much to take? OK… imagine a 200m reeling right hand barrel with workable walls, it's fickle, no doubt, but we know when it works and we never miss it when it's on, and we usually surf it with no crowd…enough said.
- More Waves: There are several other waves in the area that light up when conditions align, including No Expectations - a fun left that is a go to when Asu is on the small side, X-Celerator, a secret left tubing left, and Sand Bar, a friendly right point that works in high winds and storms.
Accommodations
Location, location, location… Asu Camp is the ONLY surf camp on Asu Island with an ALL DAY uninterrupted view of the wave at Asu from ALL locations across the camp. The layout of our camp was specifically designed this way. Wake up and know what the surf is doing out front before you’ve even wiped the sleep out of your eyes… It’s that good.
The private ocean view bungalows are Air-Conditioned and can be made to cater to a couple, two singles, or even a small family with a double bed and a single bed. Each bungalow has its own surfboard rack and outside shower.
Asu Surf Camp provides everything you need in your bungalow with simplicity and comfort; the best spring mattresses, clean white linens, Air Conditioning, mosquito nets with fans inside the net for maximum comfort, flushing toilets, hot water showers, comfortable deck chairs and hammocks, water coolers, Starlink Wifi, and amazing ocean views…
