Surf & Seasons

The Surf
G-Land is renowned for its powerful swells and is often considered home to the world’s best left-hander. Joyo’s Surf Camp is nestled within the Alas Purwo National Park, open from March to October, during the prime surf season.
This exceptional surf camp is set deep in the jungle, just steps from the beach, and sits right in front of the famous Speedies section of the G-Land reef. During the peak season, the swells are highly consistent, ensuring plenty of waves to ride. With the guidance of Joyo’s experienced surf guides, the only decision you’ll need to make is which board to choose when the surf is at its best.
G-Land’s reef break is divided into four main sections, each offering something unique depending on the tide and swell.
Kong’s, the outermost section, works best at low tide and offers long, carveable walls—perfect for drawing big turns. It’s also the most consistent, providing rideable waves even on smaller days, limited only by your courage.
Moneytrees is often the main takeoff spot. From here, the wave lines up beautifully and flows into the next section known as Launching Pads, a fast, down-the-line wall that picks up speed as it runs inside.
The final and most intense part of the wave is Speedies. It comes alive on bigger swells, throwing thick, square barrels that can funnel down the reef for up to 300 meters—one of the longest, most thrilling rides imaginable.
Beyond Speedies is 20 20’s – a mellower wave for less advanced surfers and futher down from there is Tiger Tracks, a fun and mellow right hander that the camps surf guides can also take you to!
Synopsis
G-Land is best suited for intermediate to advanced surfers. While high tide offers more mellow, forgiving waves, the lower tide transforms the reef into a high-performance barrel machine, especially at Speedies. Confidence, skill, and a solid reef sense are key when the surf turns on.
Prime surf season runs from April through October, when consistent Indian Ocean groundswells light up the reef. May to September is typically the peak, with the most powerful and cleanest swells.
Water temperatures hover between 26–28°C (79–82°F) year-round, so you won’t need a wetsuit—just a rash guard or surf shirt for sun protection and reef safety.
Access to the break is tide-dependent: during mid to high tide, a zodiac transfer is available; at low tide, surfers can walk across the exposed reef and paddle out.
Whether you’re chasing the wave of your life or looking to test your skills in one of the most iconic setups on Earth, G-Land offers an unforgettable surf experience, steeped in raw nature, consistent swell, and serious Indo power.
