Unique Accommodations

Accommodation

Olas Verdes Hotel

Olas Verdes, Safari Surf’s partner hotel, is where the office and lessons are based, and it’s our top recommendation for lodging. Opening its doors in November 2015, Olas Verdes made history as the first Platinum L.E.E.D. certified hotel in Central America. Its spacious rooms, stunning pool, and tropical backdrop create a natural Costa Rican atmosphere. Surrounded by native flora and tribes of Howler Monkeys, all 17 rooms offer views of the pool or the neighboring wildlife refuge.
Some rooms can be combined to form 2-, 3-, or 4-bedroom suites. A brief, private 2-minute stroll along a jungle path through the refuge leads to the sandy shores of Playa Guiones. At El Manglar Restaurant, located on the premises, guests can indulge in delicious culinary options to replenish their energy after a rewarding surf session.
Accommodation

Sunset Shack Hotel

The Sunset Shack Hotel, in the heart of Playa Guiones, is a relaxing 8-room boutique hotel centrally located amidst the shops, restaurants, and beach. Owned by the same individuals as the Harmony Hotel, meticulous attention to detail and top-notch customer service are hallmarks here.
The on-site restaurant focuses on plant-based fare alongside fresh seafood, aligning perfectly with their commitment to health and wellness. Sunset Shack is a 10 minute walk from Safari Surf headquarters or 5 minutes by bike, ATV, or golf cart.

Surf & Seasons

The Surf

Nosara benefits from a year-round swell, with waves breaking consistently along its expansive coastline. South swells are the largest and most consistent between April and October, but Nosara does get hints of Souths November through March along with Northwest swells when large enough.
There’s a wide variety of surf within an hour north or south of Nosara suiting all levels of surfers from beginner to advanced and all types of equipment. Safari Surf’s local guides area have grown up surfing the area and know where to target based on swell and conditions.

Playa Guiones

Playa Guiones is perhaps the most famous surf spot in Nosara, known for its consistent, mellow waves and sandy bottom. It’s an ideal spot for beginners and longboarders when small but can get hollower once it hits that head high+ mark. The beach stretches for several kilometers, providing ample space with the north end of the beach usually being the biggest.

Playa Ostional

Playa Ostional is another large beachbreak with a lot more juice than Guiones. Intermediate to advanced surfers will love this wave for its long hollow walls. With size Ostional tends to hold it’s shape and can offer proper tubes.

Playa Garza

Playa Garza offers several reefs for advanced surfers. These reefs can hold a ton of swell offering slab setups and more. This zone is best accessed with a local guide.

Marbella

A fast hollow beachbreak that breaks close to the sand. Best in the waist to overhead range, Marbella is perfect for those looking for some punchy barrels.

Other Waves…

There are many other beachbreaks, rivermouths, and reefs littered around this coastline. Little nooks and crannies offer uncrowded options and empty surprises.

Synopsis

Costa Rica has two seasons, dry and wet.
The dry season of November through April/May typically sees offshore winds, sunny skies and consistent surf in the chest to head high range.
Although less frequent than during the wet season, large swells do roll through this time of year, and it is not unheard of to get overhead waves by late February.
The wet season months of May/June through October see the largest and most consistent swells with average wave height in the head high+ range, with the larger 8’-12’ swells coming through consistently. The weather patterns during this time of year typically have glassy mornings with a light onshore flow starting in the late morning to early afternoon.
Although these months can receive a lot of rain, rain showers usually start in the late afternoon, often raining through the night. Mornings and early afternoons often have sunny skies and perfect peeling surf.
Costa Rica is a year round surf destination with water temps in the low 80’s and air temperatures in the mid to high 80’s year round.
