Overview

Staying at Macaronis Resort gives guests access to over half a dozen world-class waves, all just a short boat ride away. The famed Macaronis Left and Maca’s Right are just five minutes from the resort by speedboat, while Silabu Left is about 10 minutes away. Bowls Right sits 15 minutes from shore, and for the more adventurous, Greenbush and Bat Cave are reachable in about 40 minutes.

Macaronis Left is a perfectly shaped, high-performance wave offering a hollow barrel right off the take-off, followed by a long, rippable wall—perfect for carving, hacking, and getting creative. It’s incredibly consistent, handling everything from small playful swells to solid overhead conditions, and works on all tides and most wind directions.

To help guests reach these breaks, the resort operates a small fleet of surf boats, ranging from a nimble 5-meter dinghy to a 22-foot alloy speedboat. These boats aren’t just for surf transfers—they’re also available for quick fishing trips, snorkeling missions, and exploring the surrounding islands.

The resort operates a fleet of surf transfer boats, ranging from a nimble 5-meter dinghy to a powerful 22-foot alloy speedboat. These boats are on standby for daily surf sessions and can also be used for quick fishing or snorkeling excursions.

Synopsis

The Mentawai Islands sit off western Indonesia, just below the equator, and tend to receive more rainfall than Bali and the islands farther southeast. Indonesia has a tropical climate year-round, with little change in daylight hours, especially in the Mentawai.

There are two main seasons: wet and dry. The wet season runs from October to March, with the most rain in January and February. The dry season begins around March or April, peaks from June through August, and lines up with the heart of surf season.

Indonesia’s prime swell window falls during the southern hemisphere winter, from March/April through September/October, when powerful swells roll up from the Southern Ocean. From May through August or September, easterly trade winds are common and favor many of the main breaks. The shoulder months—March/April and September/October—often bring lighter winds, glassy conditions, and some of the best all-around surf of the year.

Dining at Macaronis is a highlight of the experience, featuring a set menu of healthy, delicious Western and Indonesian dishes prepared by professional chefs. The kitchen serves up fresh fish, imported meats, locally caught seafood, vegetarian options, soups, curries, pizzas, salads, desserts, and more.

Meals are served on a schedule to keep things organized, but if you’re scoring waves during mealtime, the staff will set aside your meal so you can enjoy it whenever you’re ready.

A standout of the week is the twice-weekly outdoor BBQ under the stars (weather permitting), where guests feast on a buffet of grilled fish, chicken, lamb chops, satays, plus mouthwatering sides, sauces, salads, and desserts—a perfect way to wind down after a day of surf.
